Hello to the GREAT employers we'll soon be meeting at the fair. I know that you all are preparing as hard as the candidates for the November 8th event. I'm going to assume that most of you are not accustomed to meeting with up to 1000 candidates who are of boomer and beyond age. Here's a tip sheet I found on the AARP site that was written to help recruiters to evaluate and select older hires.

SCORE will be at the fair. Here's a note from George Rusznak, the chair of our local S.C.O.R.E chapter. I hope we get notes like this from everyone who is coming.

SCORE, Counselors to America's Small Businesses will be at the fair. We are a local chapter of a national organization that is a resource arm of the Small Business Administration. We have over 400 chapters and over 11,000 volunteers. In Santa Barbara we counsel and mentor nearly 1000 people a year who intend to start or already own their businesses.

We are looking for a few committed, energetic and qualified volunteers with up to 20 hours a month to offer toward the management of the business of the chapter and the counseling/mentoring of its clients. We are particularly interested in people who have previously owned a business, or had worked in the areas of Marketing and Sales, Finance and Accounting, Planning, or Information Technology. Good interpersonal and problem solving skills are also highly valued attributes in the work we do. We would particularly welcome the talents of the female and the minority members of our community.

Our work helps the 28 million small businesses that provide nearly 80% of the jobs and make up just over half of our GDP. Helping entrepreneurs to start new ventures and helping small businesses to grow puts us, above all, in the job creation business. Hence our interest in the Job Fair.

While our work does not pay a salary, it provides huge benefits to our volunteers. It allows them to continue practicing their skills and use their acquired knowledge, experience and judgement that validates and reaffirms their value beyond their working career. It facilitates continued learning that helps them to remain physically and mentally fit and vital. It provides purpose and joy, an outlet for passion, and an opportunity to receive satisfaction from the tangible evidence of the value of their contribution to our society in general and our community in particular.

We appreciate the opportunity the Job Fair provides, George Rusznak, Chair

Looks like a great line up. I think SCORE's service is so valuable to anyone thinking of starting their own business or already in one and foundering on their own. A friend of mine went to them and even though he and his business were on opposite sides of a major environmental issue, the advice he got was very valuable and set him on a new track. Also he got feedback that his arguments gained some traction with one person hard set against them!

Very cool list, Don. I like the combination of community service and corporate recruiters. Should be a great job fair.
