Passing of Bruce Richardson

Dear Community,

I just learned that one of the earliest members of Santa Barbara's mature work community has passed away. He was a wonderful and encouraging participant in Adult Education and bright human in all ways.

I dedicate this last series of classes to Bruce Richardson.

I will always remember the intelligent sparks that crackled around you. Whenever I felt off track as a teacher, our eyes would meet and your smile would lift me and put me back on the rails.

Thank you, Bruce.

Our class in review

Dear Age of Work Community,

Tonight is our last class for awhile. We'll have two, wonderful guests, a little food and celebration, and plot our personal next step on the way to the continuation of our working contributions to the world.

Speaking of contributions, it occurs to me that this is one of the key reasons why I enjoy this work and this "revolution" in mature work. When I meet members of our class and watch them interact with each other and with the guests, it is so clear how much they… Continue

Most interesting job posting of the year

Our primarily boomer group will, I think, understand the coolness of this job opening up at UC Santa Cruz: Grateful Dead Archivist.

If you apply for this, you might consider printing your CV on a tie-dye background.
:)

Peace & Love,

Don

More unemployment numbers and my localized response to them.

I'm linking to this with reluctance. It's a NYT article calculating the "real" percentage of those unemployed in America. I will give you a hint, it is much higher than 10 percent.

You know this if you're out looking for work. You feel it.

But let me add a little spin to this. Of the masses looking for work right now:

How many of them are willing to work as hard as our group on… Continue

Somewhat good news for those looking to work NOW

This from Career Builder

Nearly One-in-Five Employers Plan to Hire Seasonal Workers This Year, Finds CareerBuilder Survey

CHICAGO, October 21, 2009 - The outlook for seasonal hiring in the fourth quarter of 2009 is projected to be similar to 2008, according to a new CareerBuilder survey. Eighteen percent of hiring managers plan to hire seasonal workers to meet business needs associated with the holidays and end-of-the-year wrap-ups, on par with 17 percent in 2008. At the same time, comp… Continue

Thank you. It looks like it will be an interesting class. Unfortunately I will have to be out of town for the first class meeting, but will be back for all the rest. Should I send someone to represent me so that you have the necessary count for the first class day?

Hi Don,
Do the local Unemployment and Workforce Investment Act folks know of this website as resource?
I don't remember seeing it on their informational lists...

Hi Don,
The status field is a great idea, did I miss that before or is it new?
I had an idea for the site- encouraging members to create a bio or a few sentences about what they are looking for, hope to accomplish or skills they bring. I think this could encourage some networking between site members with similar interests/needs.
Thoughts?
Regards,
Mike-
