The power of Internships
Hello!
This week I have been working on the internship part of my job here at the SBCC Career Center. I am trying to get students excited to find internships and find a variety of businesses who would like to have an intern. Internships are such a great way to "test drive" a vocation, break into a new field, or just get some practical experience under your belt.
On a personal note I have used internships to launch two important careers in my life. Once when I was a frustrated college grad - feeling like the world should be my oyster but just working as a waitress in a Chicago diner. I did an internship at a arts in education organizations and while they didn't have any jobs initially when I wowed them with my passion and determination that created a position for me!
The second time an internship played a key role in my life is when I decided I wanted to break into the field of international non profits but didn't have a clue how to do it. At a crossroads without any good ideas, I decided to volunteer in a developing country - India and brought my entrepreneurial and marketing skills to a small agency which brought education to street kids. Through this internship I became uniquely qualified for a position with a major international organization Habitat for Humanity.
These are just my own stories of success through internships - you may already have one, or yours may be waiting to happen. I'd love to hear your internship story or what would be your dream internship.
