Goleta Job 10 bucks/hour

This just in from our friends at the GVCC. Looks to me like getting paid 10/hour to go to the gym. Nice! Hi Don, I know this is not a grand job opening, however, we are looking for an employee who would be interested in a part time job as a custodian here at the center. The position would be Tues, Wed, Sat and Sun evenings starting at 4pm. Starting pay would be $10 and they would need to be able to lift 35 pounds consistently. (They would have to set up and take down tables and chairs most… Continue

Passing of Bruce Richardson

Dear Community, I just learned that one of the earliest members of Santa Barbara's mature work community has passed away. He was a wonderful and encouraging participant in Adult Education and bright human in all ways. I dedicate this last series of classes to Bruce Richardson. I will always remember the intelligent sparks that crackled around you. Whenever I felt off track as a teacher, our eyes would meet and your smile would lift me and put me back on the rails. Thank you, Bruce. Continue

Our class in review

Dear Age of Work Community, Tonight is our last class for awhile. We'll have two, wonderful guests, a little food and celebration, and plot our personal next step on the way to the continuation of our working contributions to the world. Speaking of contributions, it occurs to me that this is one of the key reasons why I enjoy this work and this "revolution" in mature work. When I meet members of our class and watch them interact with each other and with the guests, it is so clear how much they… Continue

Most interesting job posting of the year

Our primarily boomer group will, I think, understand the coolness of this job opening up at UC Santa Cruz: Grateful Dead Archivist. If you apply for this, you might consider printing your CV on a tie-dye background. :) Peace & Love, Don Continue

More unemployment numbers and my localized response to them.

I'm linking to this with reluctance. It's a NYT article calculating the "real" percentage of those unemployed in America. I will give you a hint, it is much higher than 10 percent. You know this if you're out looking for work. You feel it. But let me add a little spin to this. Of the masses looking for work right now: How many of them are willing to work as hard as our group on… Continue

Lorrie Thomas has some free classes through the SBCC PDC

A number of our speakers and class members have commented about Lorrie Thomas. She's a remarkable professional who helps a lot of folks to do their best work using the latest tools. Our SBCC PDC friends have made it possible to get some free classes from Lorrie. There's one going on as I type this, but I think this link will help you keep track of her offerings. Continue

Eric Canton's Book Suggestion

Great class last night! I was intrigued with the book that Mr. Canton talked about. Because of the wonders of the Internet, it is easy to get out-of-print books for a good price. For anything new, I urge you to go to your locally owned bookstores (moment of reverence for Chaucers here). But for things that fall along what is now being called "the long tail" of retail, I use half.com, an Ebay property that is really easy to use. I noticed that the… Continue

ceevee.com

Hello everyone, I have a weakness for new web sites classified as "Web 2.0." From a user standpoint, these sites often offer something for free that used to be expensive or exclusive. And many of them start small and then do quite well (e.g. facebook, flickr, youtube, twitter). Here's one that looks quite elegant for those wanting to have an on-line version of their résumé. It's called ceevee.com. I am only a few minutes into using it, so I ca… Continue

Top 50 Employers According to AARP

I always look forward to this list by AARP of the top employers for those older than 50. Like the magazines that rank colleges, the science behind these rankings is probably not very deep or thorough. Nonetheless, I like this because it's a celebration of those who understand the power of older workers. Congratulations to Express Employment Professionals. They made it onto the top 50. Local own… Continue
