Did you know that there are a number of depression and anxiety scales? You could write your own, right? Where would you score these days? Maybe you had your own "Status Scale", you know, when you were the "Before the Age of Work" you, and now when you think of it, find that you have a lower subjective score than you ever imagined on that one. Instead of contributing to your grandchildrens' college education funds; adding to your rare plant collection; traveling anywhere; donating to any cause; buying tickets to an event; going for spa treatments; joining/renewing memberships; taking your car in for maintenance, attending a reunion or buying health insurance, you're canceling everything you can and just barely holding it together. There is, however, "The Hope Scale". Do you see your situation as a challenge? What's the biggest one you faced before this one? What helped you then? Where are those resources within you now? Where is your support now? Don's encouraged the class to turn to each other. Come a little early and say hello; stay a few minutes afterwards. Exchange phone numbers. A walk on the beach is free. Take control of what you can. Set two goals for the rest of your day. Take the advice you'd give your best friend or your kids.
